Our location in the story is based in an abandoned mental asylum. The scenery is meant to look very creepy and empty. It contains dark, long corridors and countless amounts of strange markings all over the walls. All these visuals tie heavily with the Thriller genre because they are all giving off the effect of fear and suspense (which are the main attributes to good a Thriller film). The definition to a thriller film is: “a novel, play, or film with an exciting plot, typically involving crime or espionage”. The set design for the location is for it to embody all these intense emotions and spew it out directly into the viewers. The actual location we got hold of does not exactly visually match what was described above, because of budget limits and safety. But we can and will try our best to match as closely as possible to above the standard set for thriller films.
The reason for the choice of an abandoned mental asylum is because these locations are common targets for vandals and criminals in the real world, therefore, we trying to capture the real world, societal taboo and fear of such a location, amplifying it, and then projecting it to the viewers. It can really create a heightened sense of tension and get the best reactions out of the audience.
Below are trailers to some movies with a similar location to our film idea:
‘The Jacket’
‘Stonehearst Asylum’
‘Gothika’
