What is a sub genre?
The thriller genre varies and has a wide range of what it can include with in it. The main thing about sub-genres is that they overlap with other genres. Thrillers are defined by the moods they make the audience feel. For example makingt them feel heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety. For example Scream. Scream makes the audience feel scared and heightens your emotions of suspense leaving you scared.
Types of sub genres of thrillers
Mystery Thriller
A typical thing of mystery thrillers is that they include crimes or something that needs to be solved or prevented, e.g. terrorism, murder, kidnapping. It usually includes people being undercover or trying to hide from the antagonist as they are on the run. This type of sub genre, allows the audience to usually know things before the characters in the film, which gives them the advantage and makes the film more interesting. The mystery is revealed throughout the film which makes the audience feel involved and more connected which adds more dramatic effectiveness.
Psychological Thriller
This genre focusses a lot on mental levels of the characters and how they put people in danger mentally rather than physically The main character is usually unstable and they will play mind games with other characters or play devilish games which will usually end in one person losing. The plot usually plays with the audiences mind and make them think something when usually they are thinking the wrong thing which causes suspense within the audience. The Psychological role engages the audiences and plays with their minds swell as the characters.
An example of a Psychological Thriller film is Orphan. It focusses on the characters mental state, and how she does unstable things. She has different emotions that she expresses, which makes her mentally un un stable.

Supernatural Thriller
Supernatural thrillers involve a lot of suspense, tension and the main one plot twists. The typical way in which a supernatural thriller movie pans out is that protagonist and/or villain will have powers. The powers will usually be caused by devils, ghosts etc.
An example of a supernatural thriller is "What lies beneath" as it contains paranormal elements, which is another main part of supernatural thrillers.

Science Fiction Thriller
Science fiction thrillers a lot of the time include robots, and artificial intelligent. This includes a lot of action, and science fiction characters, this creates a more realistic approach and the plot will revolve around the sophisticated technology that the film. A lot of the time they are set within the future.

Politcal Thriller
Politcal thrillers usually include the main protagonist ensuring the stability of the government or protecting someone high up. There is usually topics which are involved such as, terrorism or political corruption, or even someone that is being protected, who is involved in the government. The viewers enjoy this and it brings intelligence and real life matters into consideration.
An example of a political thriller is "White house down". It overlaps with conspiracy theories and introduces realistic views, but still brings tension and suspense to the viewers watching.
Spy Thriller
Spy genres involve a lot of action and deal with the subject of fictional espionage, either in a realistic way or as basis for fantasy. They usually involve government, or some type of high end agency as they need to have secretive information which is involved. They include themes of escapism and capture.
For example the film "The tourist" is a spy thriller as it contains the theme of espionage within a government agency.
